Shaping the future

The Southern Counties Archery Society (SCAS) is one of Archery GB’s regional bodies, covering thirteen counties across the southern region. It plays a key role in promoting the sport, supporting clubs and archers, and organising major tournaments. All Surrey Archery members are automatically associate members of SCAS.

A long‑standing event

Among its annual tournaments, the Southern Counties Archery Meeting (SCAM) is one of the oldest. First held in 1892 as the Championship of the South, it has run almost continuously ever since and remains a respected fixture in the archery calendar, particularly for those who enjoy traditional imperial rounds.

Why SCAM is being reviewed

Shifts in the sport — including Archery GB’s National Ranking structure, alignment with World Archery formats, and wider societal changes — have led to a decline in participation at imperial‑round tournaments. As a result, SCAS is reviewing the structure of SCAM to ensure it remains relevant, appealing, and sustainable.

The current format

SCAM is currently held over four days and includes:

• A traditional Longbow day (2‑way BLBS Western round)
• An AGB American round
• A two‑day Championship meeting (Double York, Hereford/Bristol rounds)

To help reinvigorate the event, SCAS is seeking ideas from members across the region.

Surrey Archery has launched a new initiative designed to encourage novice archers to take part in competitions outside of their own clubs. Open exclusively to Surrey Archers (members of Surrey Archery Clubs or direct members) these supportive events aim to help new archers (shooting less than 2 years and A1 or bel ow) build confidence and gain valuable experience in external tournament settings.

The tour will consist of four events taking place over the summer beginning in May.

• Round-Western 50

Participants are encouraged to take part in all four events so that overall winners can be determined at the end of the tour. Medals (Gold, Silver, Bronze) will be awarded at each event with overall tour winners announced after the final round.

Overall tour result winners will be determined from archers best 3 scores over the 4 legs of the tour.

• Round 1. Thomas Wall Archers (No all-carbon arrows permitted) 9th May 2026
• Round 2. Woking Archery Club 18th July 2026
• Round 3. Farnham Archery Club 16th August 2026
• Round 4. Laleham Archery Club 13th September 2026

Following the successful Intercounty Friendly with Buckinghamshire at the Surrey Target Champs there are two further Intercounty shoots planned this year:

SCAS Senior + Junior Intercounty

• To be held on the 3rd August 2025 in Andover
• The format is a WA720 followed by a Mixed Team H2H
• We are able to enter 1 man and 1 woman from each bow type (up to a maximum of 8 archers) – both for Seniors and Juniors
• Selecting now

AGB National County Team Championship

• To be held on the weekend 27th/28th September 2025 at Lilleshall
• The format is a WRS WA50/70 on each day followed by a Team H2H on Saturday and a Mixed Team H2H on the Sunday
• These are teams of 3 archers for each bow type and gender

• We will select early August – to allow finding of accommodation

For selection please make sure that your Club Records Officer has your scores so that they can submit them, if you are interested in representing Surrey and are available on the relevant dates.

The usual selection criteria apply (https://surreyarchery.org/records-ranking/). Please ask them to submit the scores on the spreadsheet template sent out earlier this year.

As part of the Surrey Target Championships in June 2025. Surrey Archery hosted a friendly inter-county match between Buckinghamshire and Surrey. The previous one was hosted by Buckinghamshire last year at their Target Champs.
Each county had four mixed teams (one per bow type) and the full results were as follows:

• Buckinghamshire won the Barebow event
• Surrey won the Compound, Longbow and Recurve events.
